Hyderabad : 25 foreign students, most of them hailing
from different East African countries were arrested for
allegedly overstaying here in violation of rules, the
police said Wednesday.
The arrests were made during a raid at a house in the
Humayun Nagar neighbourhood here Tuesday.
The police said one of the students was also
suspected to be involved in drug trafficking.
Those arrested include 13 Ethiopians, nine Somalians
and two Djiboutians, said a statement from the police
Wednesday.
The police seized 30 bundles of suspicious leafy
contraband, 19 passports along with visas and 23
residential permits.
The police claimed that these foreigners were
illegally staying and pursuing various courses in
different colleges here in violation of Foreigners Act.
They were also indulging in anti-social activities,
the police added.
"They came to India for different purposes like
visit, medical and business, but got admissions
illegally in different colleges. Some of them were
registered as students in other states but came to
Hyderabad without intimation to competent authorities of
the states where they were registered," said the
statement.
Some of them were found possessing leaves, suspected
to be narcotic in nature and banned under Narcotic Drugs
and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985. The leaves were
seized and are being sent to the forensic laboratory for
examination.
Police officials said they were planning to take
action against certain colleges, which were encouraging
unauthorised admissions without checking visas and
permits.
The arrested include a Somali national Ahmed Khader
Yousuf Elmi, 36, who was involved in procuring
suspicious contraband from Adis Ababa via Mumbai through
his agents. He was selling the suspected contraband to
other foreigners in Hyderabad.
The samples of the suspected contraband have been
sent to Andhra Pradesh Forensic Science Laboratory (APFSL)
for analysis.
